Cyclone Slams Horse Sanctuary & Destroys Winter Shelters, & Tack Shed filled with Winter Horse Blankets

Hurricane Kay hit shore Thursday night and turned into a Tropical Cyclone, lashing the west coast of Baja California, Mexico and threatening the west coast region of Southern California. The powerful storm created havoc for the Wild For Life Foundation (WFLF) and the rescue horses and burros that reside at their sanctuary facility, over 150 miles away. 

Gusts of winds estimated at 75-95 mpg began slamming WFLF's Lifetime Equine Refuge facility in east county San Diego, Friday morning.  Several horse shelters were ripped out of the ground, torn to pieces, and carried by the wind more than 200 yards away before landing & impaling themselves onto the neighboring fence line. A funnel cloud touched down next to the barn and completely flattened a tack shed that was filled with winter horse blankets and other essential supplies for the rescue horses & burros. 

Raging winds and sideways rain has made it difficult for WFLF's volunteer rescue team to safely assess all the damages which are currently estimated to be in the thousands. 

The rescue horses and burros who reside at the sanctuary were shaken up. However, thankfully, none of them were injured. 

Just a few weeks ago, in mid July, WFLF's Southern California sanctuary was directly threatened by a 
raging wildfire that burned for several days in the area. 

The charred hillside from the fire can be seen in the background in the below photograph depicting remnants of some of the mangled horse shelters that were destroyed in the storm on Friday. 

"Earlier in July, our sanctuary manager became seriously disabled due to a life threatening medical condition. Although we've been blessed to have the good fortune of caring neighbors and kind supporters who have been temporarily helping out with many of the horse keeping duties, much much more help and support is needed while our sanctuary manager is recovering. And now the need for urgent support is even more dire due to the devastation caused by this storm," - Katia Louise, President Wild For Life Foundation.

"WFLF has gotten through severe storms & challenging times in the past, but nothing like this has ever happened before," Katia added. "In 2017, a series of winter storms slammed our former equine rescue facility with torrential rain, flooding, and mud barreling through, washing out internal rescue access ways and leaving the grounds saturated, with ditches over 6' deep and up to 6' wide, right where over 75 of our rescue horses and burros lived," said Katia. "We were digging horses & donkeys out of the mud, and digging trenches through debris for weeks." Washed out roads made in impossible to bring in the needed heavy equipment, and the pouring rain, coupled with hail and snow left the rescue team and their sanctuary crippled for months. 

Through the kind and generous support of WFLF's donors, the charity's all volunteer rescue team eventually was able to evacuate all 75 of their rescue horses and burros and relocate them to other locations.  "We were also able to salvage much of our stable equipment from the 2017 winter storm series," Katia said. 

"Not this time, stated Jay Coskie, WFLF Vice President. The storm that hit us Friday has caused devastating damages. Two of the brand new shelters that we just purchased and installed this spring were completely demolished by this freak storm.  Also other shelters, the tack shed and much of its contents have been damaged beyond repair. Plus we get snow here and those shelters and blankets are essential to keeping our rescue horses warm and dry during the harsh winter months which are now right around the corner."

In early 2014, the Wild For Life Foundation (WFLF) received requests from a New Mexico nonprofit for money, services and goods to save the lives of approximately 150 of its horses from slaughter. WFLF launched a specific grassroots Rescue and Recovery Mission to help aid and save as many of the horses as possible. WFLF relied on its impeccable reputation and hard-earned resources to raise the attention and support needed to save these horses.  WFLF's robust advocacy and rescue efforts on behalf of its mission to save the horses caught international media attention and was followed and supported by the nation's top equine coalitions, several national animal welfare organizations and many equine rescue groups.

The New Mexico nonprofit and its representatives repeatedly endorsed and thanked WFLF and its

staff for their efforts in saving the horses’ lives. WFLF contributed large sums of money and valuable lifesaving services to the New Mexico nonprofit to aid and care for the at-risk horses that were being temporarily housed by the New Mexico nonprofit at dry lot cattle pens. WFLF expended over $18,000.00 in 2014 to evacuate and transport approximately 100 horses to new homes selected by the nonprofit. At the nonprofit’s request, and at WFLF’s expense, WFLF agreed to accept possession of approximately 48 of the least adoptable horses, including 3 pregnant mares, at two WFLF facilities in California. It cost WFLF over $55,000.00 to save the horses in 2014.  WFLF's costs to feed, house and care for these horses continued thereafter and have exceeded $150,000.00 since 2014.

In 2015, WFLF received an anonymous whistleblower report which eventually led to the termination of certain individuals and the parting of ways of the two organizations. Just before departing, a certain individual filed claims against two WFLF representatives.  The court dismissed both cases in their entirety less than one month after they were filed.

WFLF has moved on and continues to dedicate its hard-earned resources toward advancing our valuable and life-saving animal protection missions.  As demonstrated by numerous testimonials, reviews and awards, WFLF operates its services and programs with the highest level of integrity, compassion and honor. We have successfully saved hundreds of wild and domestic horses and burros from abuse, neglect, slaughter and other forms of cruelty. The animals served by WFLF are provided with quality tender loving care, and peaceful safe housing.

Every day we work to save lives and keep horses and burros safe from unspeakable cruelty and life threatening danger. Good Samaritans, volunteers and caring community members have made it their mission to support these lifesaving services by the Wild For Life Foundation (WFLF) charity. WFLF is a purely volunteer-driven organization, which means we have limited resources to do the work we do. When the animals arrive at our doors, most have suffered and are in need of immediate medical care, and although our vets work at negotiated rates, some of our animals require extensive medical care. CALL TO ACTION FOR WARM SPRINGS WILD HORSES

ALERT! The Public Comment Period ends Friday Aug 31, 2018
The BLM proposes to capture wild mares in October from the Warm Springs HMA in Oregon and experiment on them as a means for population control.

They intend to try a rare procedure which removes the ovaries by crushing and pulling them out with a looped-chain medical instrument called an ecraseur. This procedure opens the mares up to: serious risk from infection; evisceration (should intestines come through the incision); and hemorrhaging.

There is a high frequency of post-operative complications affiliated with ovariectomy via colpotomy, life-threatening. Most domestic horses upon which this surgery is performed are hospitalized for 3 to 7 days and quite carefully monitored post-operatively for signs of hemorrhage.

A Message from Katia Louise, the Filmmaker of Saving America's Horses

Dear friends,
I'm humbled to bring you this update about Saving America's Horses, what the latest is regarding the issues and tell you a little more about the this film, how it came about,  and what's happening behind the scenes on the project itself as we continue to move forward in our mission to protect horses and burros.


PRODUCTION, RELEASE AND DISTRIBUTION: Research and investigation into the issues that this film centers on first began in 1998 and has continued through and into the production phase of this film which began in 2009. The first festival cut of this educational documentary film project was released worldwide in 2010 through the Los Angeles Women's International Film Festival where it won BEST DOCUMENTARY FILM. Subsequent festival cuts of the project were released thereafter through multiple festival screenings where the film won numerous international awards including BEST ENVIRONMENTAL FILM in Canada.

The film project was then completely remastered and reformatted in conformance with ST 428-2:2006 D-Cinema Distribution Master requirements as set by the ACADEMY OF MOTION PICTURE ARTS AND SCIENCES for Academy qualification and was then released with Oscar consideration and exhibited through BI-COASTAL THEATRICAL RELEASE in 2012.

This full length feature documentary film project has also privately screened at numerous educational venues across the country. The theatrical version of the full length film has recently been remastered and updated with new footage, current data and statistics, and is ready to go to the next level. A 10 minute featurette version of the film is also available in multiple formats for licensed short programming purposes. A series Advocacy Videos have also been produced through a compilation of excerpts from the film, and these remain available online WFLF’s websites and social media forums as educational tools for the benefit of the horses. 

Many other multimedia educational tools and materials have also been created through select data, images and excerpts from the film project to raise awareness and educate the public about the issues as that have sadly continued to threaten America's equine population as a whole.

ABOUT OUR CAST, TEAM AND CREW: It has been a great honor to serve America's at risk equines through this multimedia educational program. Many of the nation's finest and most devoted equine welfare professionals and experts joined together through the making of SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES, and they graciously have contributed in many ways. Many of these experts have been deeply involved in this cause for over 25 years.


SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES is an independent educational film project under Wild for Life Foundation (WFLF), a Federally registered and fully compliant 501c3 all volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to saving, protecting and preserving equines. As a small grassroots charity, WFLF raised much of the needed funds to pay for the essential costs for production and release of the film during the various phases of distribution. On a personal note, my role in the production of the film first began when I seeded the project while working as a teaching and performing artist, and doing small roles in film and TV projects. I have humbly served on behalf of this and the other projects and programs under WFLF as a volunteer since the beginning. This has been part of my vow, my way of giving back to the animals and to our mission as a devoted animal advocate and animal welfare professional. -- All said however, my humble contribution represents just one of many contributions, or links if you will; links-in-a-chain of reputable individuals and organizations that have come together over the years and contributed to the completion and release of SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES; which would not have been possible without the full support of our dedicated and extraordinary cast, crew, and loving, devoted and compassionate donors..

Saving America's Horses tells the story of courage, honor and betrayal in a country divided, inspiring great hope for the protection for all horses and burros from cruelty. This powerful message speaks to the heart of this cause. Without unity, the pro-horse movement does not have the strength to stand up against the powerful deep pocket proponents of slaughter.

On behalf of WFLF and the dedicated team at Saving America's Horses, I urge all those who want to make a difference for the horses and burros, to stand in unity against the recent escalated efforts, the undermining devices, and misleading propaganda disseminated by the proponents of slaughter.

Make no mistake; this is a call to action for the full support of a united voice in the fight against horse slaughter, a cruel and barbaric practice that should have ended long, long ago.

RECENT ISSUE DEVELOPMENTS: America's horses and burros need your voice today. Tens of thousands of wild horses' and burros' lives are at stake! In May 2018, the Interior ordered BLM to empty out wild horse and holding corrals by selling 25 horses at a time with no questions asked to any buyer. Despite a prohibition on such cruelty by the Interior Appropriations Committee, the Interior Secretary has mandated that the horses must be sold. All BLM public holding facilities must comply, whether they like it or not.

As advocates in this ongoing fight for a win against slaughter, one of our biggest challenges has been and remains getting the truth out in the open. Timing is pivotal, with the ongoing elimination of our wild horses from the rangelands, from holding areas, and with the escalated push by foreign investors to reopen horse slaughter plants in the U.S., more and more horses are suffering the cruel death of barbaric slaughter. A united voice for the horses must be restored and maintained. Time is of the essence.

What most people don't realize is that the disinformation campaigns related to our mission are driven by deep pocket special interests who do NOT really care about the horses at all. No matter what you've heard, there is only one truth: horse slaughter is NOT humane euthanasia. Nor is it a "necessary evil".

When the value of life is reduced to the cost of a pound of flesh; coverups can easily gain momentum, and precious ground can be lost when advocates are pitted against one another and lose track of the goal. However; when the dust settles strength can be found in one single moment of truth. And that moment has come.

WFLF and its Saving America's Horses educational project has stood the tests of time. We've come through the fire and we are still standing because our documentation is incontrovertible. 

It remains our chief objective at Wild For Life Foundation and Saving America's Horses to bring the truth to the public and to effect the changes needed for the protection and preservation of equines in America.

The threat to our public lands in the West is real. The Secretary of the Interior sees little value in preservation. Rather he seeks to maximize revenues from ever-expanding oil and gas and mining operations, while propping up the money pit known as welfare ranching.

So where does this leave America's wild horses and burros and other wildlife who rely on public lands managed by Interior's Bureau of Land Management (BLM), long jokingly referred to as the Bureau of Livestock and Mining? (The "joke" has become chillingly real.)

Interior has ordered BLM to empty out wild horse and holding corrals by selling 25 horses at a time with no questions asked to any buyer. These are wild horses who once roamed free at little cost to the public. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to diagnose the outcome for these helpless wild horses who have lost freedom and family and will now make the ultimate sacrifice. They will end up dying a horrific death in Mexican and Canadian slaughterhouses.

Despite a prohibition on such cruelty by the Interior Appropriations Committee, the Interior Secretary has mandated that the horses must be sold. All BLM public holding facilities must comply, whether they like it or not.

The Wild for Life Foundation (WFLF) and SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES strongly opposes any budget provision that would allow the killing of wild horses and burros, and opposes the removal of the protective language which currently restricts the sale of wild horses and burros by the BLM for slaughter.

BUDGET JUSTIFICATIONS by The United States, Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) call for approval of proposed provisions that if passed would allow the BLM to exterminate America's wild horses and burros and allow the BLM to sell wild horses and burros for slaughter.

BACKGROUND:
In September of 2016, when public outcry against the recommended killing of 45,000 wild American horses and burros reached mainstream level it caught the attention of some of the most powerful mainstream media outlets. The combination of these factors brought increased exposure to the systemic mistreatment and reckless mismanagement of the wild horses and our public lands. This in turn caused a detrimental backlash of criticism against the government and the BLM.

A flurry of subsequent news reports based on statements by BLM spokespersons then headlined a false positive result for America’s horses which effectively left the public in the dark. For example, reportedly,  “BLM spokesperson, Tom Gorey, said that the agency will continue its current policy of caring for unadopted or unsold wild horses and burros and will not sell or send any animals to slaughter."

WFLF Saving America's Horses' educational alerts inform the public about the facts. As revealed in the SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES documentary film, the BLM has been and continues to be a very powerful proponent of slaughter.

We applaud the many U.S. Representatives in the Senate and the House who continue to support the needed protections for America’s wild horse and burro population. We especially give thanks to Lisa Murkowski, Tom Udall and Dianne Feinstein for their hard work and support in protecting America’s horses from slaughter.

WFLF has produced a series of EDUCATIONAL ALERTS with FACTS THAT REFUTE BLM's MYTHS.  We urge the public not to be duped by the clever and misleading BLM propaganda. Selling the animals ‘without limitation’ or under sale authority effectively strips their protection from abuse and slaughter.

Horses and burros are living symbols of the historic spirit of the West. They contribute to the diversity of life forms within the Nation and enrich the lives of the American people. However they are sadly disappearing from the American scene and must be protected.

In May of 2017 the BLM released their 2018 Budget proposing provisions that would strip protections and effectively allow the BLM to shoot & kill wild horses and burros and sell wild horses and burros for slaughter. But by raising awareness and educating the public about the importance of keeping these protections in place, we can win for the horses.  America's wild horses and burros need support now more than ever.  Together, we are their voice and they need to be heard.

March 31, 2017, Riverside, CA –  Lifetime Equine Refuge - Saving America's Horses Winter Storm Update 
After a nearly seven-year drought, the weather pendulum turned the other direction this winter season with unrelenting torrential rains unleashed from the tropics pounding WFLF’s Anza-Borrego, California facilities with a series of extreme winter storms. By Jan 27, 2017 the season Anza’s rain total had already exceeded 12.5” followed by potentially the biggest storm in 12 years which crashed into Southern California in February bringing heavy rain, high winds, and mud slides prompting evacuations, blocking roads, downing trees and knocking out power.  “The biggest storm in February hit us with over 8 inches of rain in less than 48 hours,” said WFLF vice president Jay Coskie. Winds whipped across Southern California with gusts of 50 mph to 80 mph and knocked down multiple power lines leaving more than 135,000 customers with no power. The extreme storms have prompted rescues and injuries from flooding and toppled trees. Authorities say hundreds of trees and power lines have been downed, according to the AP.

It’s been one heck of an extreme storm season for WFLF’s Lifetime Equine Refuge this winter. So big that our Anza-Borrego equine rescue facility had to close for several months due to extreme damage, power outages, washed out roads and access ways, as announced by the management team. Never fear, WFLF’s educational programming has resumed but as always, patience has been the key for the safety the equine residents through these trying times.

Safety is the first concern for WFLF’s family of equines, visitors and staff. Therefore WFLF management had requested for only specific operational staff comes to Lifetime Equine Refuge and that all tours to the facilities canceled until further notice. “Persistent heavy rains, flash flooding, high winds, mud slides and debris flows wreaked havoc on our operations which resulted in permanent damage to key sections of our facilities including layup, feed and training areas,” said director Katia Louise.  WFLF crews have been working around the clock fighting conditions and clearing debris and mud for months now.  "We have been chasing the needed repairs days and night. There is only so much we can do," Louise added.

“Those of us in remote areas have had to make due on our own. There were even many times when members of operational staff could not get to us.” Local roads and the access roads within WFLF’s facilities were washed out completely. Whole sections of WFLF’s facility were cut off – one side from the other.  “Conditions were such that we hand shoveled mud in the pouring rain oftentimes through the night, hand filling in washed out flood ways with rocks, firewood and whatever we could get our hands on so that we could maintain access for continued provision of care for our family of equines horses in the stable areas on the other side of the ranch.”

Multiple rounds of heavy rain and mountain snow have slammed into California – Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski said.

“Numerous National Weather Service warnings came one after the other with sudden on slots of high wind gusts of up to 80 mph, thunderstorms, snow, torrential rains and flooding our facility where the grounds were already saturated just below the side of steep slopes where canyons runoffs create a perfect recipe for mudslides," WFLF vice president Jay Coskie said. The National Weather Service urged residents to take immediate precautions to protect themselves and their property. “These heavy rainfalls have had a hard time absorbing into the soil and with each passing storm we’ve experienced mounting incidents of flooding, mudslides and debris flow,” added director, Katia Louise. The waves of torrential rain on the steep mountain slope which continue straight up from our facility have caused continued wash outs with surface and debris flow which have inundated the low-water crossings and river gulches created by the pockets of dangerous, swift-water stretches." Mountains and foothills in particular get dumped on as confirmed by Kathy Hoxsie, meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “Mountains are all oriented perfectly to help squeeze out, very effectively, the moisture."

Multiple natural slides made travel extremely dangerous during the storms, if not impossible, over the mountain roads and hampered the efforts of road crews. Hazardous flooding and mud issues and slides have affected the entire state. Meteorologists reports have confirmed the record siege of storms have virtually wiped out the long-term drought conditions across California. "This facility will never be the same," said director Katia Louise.

"We are pleased to report that all the horses fared through the ordeal without any injuries, but we are not out of the dark and need support in covering losses and costs for damages resulting from these relentless winter storms." The good news is that we are now able to safely relocate remainder our equines residents as needed, but financial support is needed to help pay for transport costs. Nearly three months have been lost and the need for urgent funds is more crucial than ever.

Jan 31, 2017, Riverside, CA - The severe and relentless rains and flooding of these past few weeks in Southern California have put Wild For Life Foundation’s Family of America’s Rescue Horses and Burros in Dire Need of Your Help.

A series of winter storms slammed our equine rescue facilities with torrential rain, flooding, and mud barreling through, washing out internal rescue access ways and leaving our the grounds saturated with ditches over 6' deep and up to 6' wide at the home of the Wild For Life Foundation (WFLF), and peaceful harbor rescue and sanctuary for over 75 horses and burros. 

Our all volunteer rescue team members have been digging trenches through mud and debris for days to drain pooling water, from the most recent onslaught of intense sustained, pouring rain, coupled with hail and snow which has left us crippled and in need of urgent disaster relief. 

The washed out roads have made the delivery of hay and feed very difficult. Our facilities have been hit hard with extensive storm damage. Urgent financial support is needed to clean up and get back to regular business.  

In just nine years, the Wild For Life Foundation has built a solid reputation based on integrity and compassion with its extraordinary work in advocacy and hands-on care for animals in desperate need of help. Mustangs run free after narrowly escaping slaughter

This is a group of Mustang arrivals to Wild For Life Foundation's Lifetime equine Refuge sanctuary program - WFLF MMRM circa 2014. These Mustangs, including three pregnant mares had lost their safe and peaceful home in NM when their former owner lost their gratis lease, and had no other means to save them. If not saved through the WFLF, approximately 150 horses, whose lives were in imminent danger, would have shipped to slaughter. This was their first time to run free after being rescued out of a feedlot and narrowly escaping slaughter. Three healthy baby foals (two fillies and a colt) were born within a couple weeks of their arrival to California at one of WFLF's wild horse sanctuary facilities. They have since grown into healthy happy youngsters. Some of these Mustangs can be seen in Wild For Life Foundation's international award winning documentary film, Saving America's Horses: A Nation Betrayed which was released bicoastally to theaters in 2012. Approximately 100 members of the herd were transported out of NM and placed in sanctuary homes in several other states.
