Sassy, the Thoroughbred finds forever safety and loving care

WFLF Lifetime Equine Refuge welcomes Sassy, a Thoroughbred mare, just rescued. We extend our thanks for the kindness and generosity of the many donors that made her rescue possible. We are partnering with SCTR who will be taking Sassy in and providing her care and training. Your donations have secured a full year of sponsorship for this very lucky horse.

Sassy is a 14 year old Thoroughbred that never raced and due to economic problems, she was at risk for slaughter. This beautiful mare just needed a second chance, but her days became numbered without a safe place to go. Supporters of Wild for Life Foundation were alerted that Sassy needed help and a full week went by while volunteers made calls on her behalf. It had come down to the wire for Sassy, but a handful of dedicated supporters scrambled to raise enough funds for this very lucky horse.

This week WFLF Lifetime Equine Refuge rescued and delivered Sassy to our partnering rescue, Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue (SCTR). Sassy was so excited to arrive at SCTR :) You could see the smile in her eyes!

Sassy was able to spend the afternoon in the round pen just after arriving, where she rolled and rolled and rolled! Each time before she got up she did this really cute pose.

The fight to end horse slaughter has gone on for well over a decade in the U.S. with protective legislation introduced each congressional session; only to be later squelched as a result of the powerful lobby that is pushing to reopen horse slaughter plants in America.

Documented evidence of egregious violations and a lack of enforcement by the USDA in U.S. slaughterhouses led to the defunding of USDA inspections in 2007, but in the absence of federal ban on horse slaughter, our wild and domestic horses continue to be shipped across federal borders where they are slaughtered just as inhumanely to this very day.

In order to effect change, we are educating the public through the world's most powerful visual resource, cinema. "Saving America's Horses - A Nation Betrayed" is the lifesaving documentary film that can change everything for our horses. It's an intelligent and hard hitting expose` that will wake up and shake up the public so that they will take the action needed to pass pending federal legislation.

Beverly Strauss is the Co Founder of MidAtlantic Horse Rescue. She’s a lifelong horsewoman, former racehorse trainer and owner. Beverly has been rescuing thoroughbreds from kill pens at livestock auctions for years; working with them and places them into new homes as riding horses and sport horses. Through MidAtlantic Horse Rescue Beverly has rescued and placed over 400 thoroughbreds directly, as well as saving another 500+ thoroughbreds for other rescues. Meet Carmel: Saving America's Horses' Hero for Horses Ambassador

Carmel is a Thoroughbred racehorse with a winning track record, but she, like 1000's of other Thoroughbreds in the U.S. was not provided protection, safety and welfare following the end of her career.
Carmel was sold at auction for slaughter, but just before being shipped she was rescued by Wild for Life Foundation. Though she was underweight and traumatized from the ordeal, she has made a full recovery.

In addition to the environmental disaster, and the legacy of cruelty this violent industry leaves behind, anyone considering the reopening of horse slaughter must beware of the “$42million in losses attributed directly to horse slaughter” as stated by Henry Skjerven, the former director of the recently debunked Natural Valley Farms, Canada.

Natural Valley Farms was a former beef slaughter plant that had converted over to slaughtering horses. In a public statement by Henry Skjerven, he said "Natural Valley Farms died the day the decision makers chose to kill horses… most notable was our failure with the CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency)". As can be noted on the CFIA website, they’re "dedicated to safeguarding food, animals and plants, which enhances the health and well-being of Canada's people, environment and economy." (The CFIA removed the company's operating license)

Proponents of horse slaughter are urging U.S. cattle producers to convert their operations to killing horses, but some meat producers remember all too well Henry Skjerven's cautionary tale. Ted Pohlman of Pohlman’s Meat Processing, Indiana told WTHI TV "if a slaughterhouse starts killing horses.. they’ll lose all their beef and hog business.” Even Pohlman believes many people have too many emotional attachments to horses to consider killing and eating them. Pohlman also stated concerns about the safety of horse meat given the toxic substances they receive.

Never before has there been a need so great to ban together for the greater good in the protection of one of our most precious and historic natural resources, the horse.

The recent lifting of a ban on funding for USDA inspectors at horse slaughter plants in the U.S., fueled by pro slaughter propaganda has led to a proverbial media frenzy with reports based on proponent anecdotes rather than reality, or actual fact checking.

Documented evidence of egregious violations and a lack of enforcement by the USDA in U.S. slaughterhouses led to the defunding of USDA inspections in 2007, but in the absence of federal ban on horse slaughter, our wild and domestic horses continue to be shipped across federal borders where they are slaughtered just as inhumanely to this very day.

The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act of 2011, S.B. 1176, amends the Horse Protection Act (HPA) to prohibit the sale or transport of horses or equine parts in interstate or foreign commerce with the intent of processing for human consumption. The House version of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act is known as H.R. 2966.

Regardless of why, we as a culture, are so repulsed by the thought of consuming horse flesh, and the reasons are many; if we fail to uphold our fundamental moral and social responsibilities, we are in effect dooming the fate of our own humanity.

If you are concerned about the inhumane treatment of animals, or concerned about serious threats to human health, or concerned about sustaining our environment, support Saving America's Horses. Only a federal ban can protect us from the destructive and predatory trade of horse slaughter.

8 NV Wild Horses Need Help Now

Dear friends and horse advocates,

We received the following information about 8 wild horses in NV. Since they were trapped on NV Ag lands they do not have the same protection as the wild horses on BLM lands and are instead considered feral. Feral horses trapped and removed by the NV Dept of Ag are subject to sale or auction. However the NV Department of Ag will be making them available for adoption for a limited period of time. If you can help one or more of these horses by adopting them please contact Jim R Barbee, Director, Nevada Department of Agriculture, directly at the number provided below.

We have no further information at this time but will update details as they become available.

We have picked up 8 horses through our traps, they will be advertised through Mason Valley Newspaper. In summary we will offer them for adoption at $90 per horse based on the cost of feed and processing. Any horses that are not adopted will be sent to the Fallon livestock Sale. All adoption will require the horse to be removed from the warm springs facility on the day of adoption. Ownership will be transferred to the adoptee on the day of the adoption. I will follow up on the exact date when I receive the final draft of the advertisement. Thanks Jim

There has been overwhelming support by the American public, the horse community and the House of Representatives to include defunding language in the 2012 Agriculture Appropriations bill but special Conference Committee members Representative Jack Kingston (R-GA), Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI), and Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO), just removed that language from the final bill.

The extensive evidence of insidious cruelty when horse slaughter was permitted in the U.S. underscores the crucial need for protective legislation, but the truth about the misuse of humane guidelines by the proponents of slaughter has been a powerful device in their deceiving campaigns. "One of the biggest challenges in getting protection against the cruelty of horse slaughter is the constant misinformation propagated by proponents of horse slaughter and then circulated by the media," said Katia Louise, Founder Wild for Life Foundation, Director "Saving America's Horses".

"The action to restore the federal program will cost Americans at least $5 million a year and pull limited USDA inspectors from ensuring the humane treatment and safety of our nation’s food supply,” said Chris Heyde, deputy director of AWI’s government and legal affairs department.

We are calling on everyone who cares about the welfare of America’s horses to demand that Congress pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act immediately.

Americans spoke out against this practice, and since 2005, Congress has prevented horse slaughter in the U.S. by cutting funds for inspections of horse meat from its annual Agriculture Appropriations Bill.

Even though the current Congress prides itself on reducing government spending, some members are arguing that we should resume funding inspections for equine slaughterhouses—a step that would allow them to reopen on U.S. soil!

Please call one of special conference committee members that's currently debating the Agriculture Appropriations Bill. This committee will play a pivotal role in determining whether horse slaughter returns to the United States. You are in a key position to impact this decision!

What You Can Do
Place a brief, polite phone call and say: “Please retain language in the Agriculture Appropriations Bill that bans the use of tax dollars to fund horse slaughterhouse inspections.” Making the call will be fast and easy, and could make a real difference for thousands of American horses while we work to pass a permanent ban on horse slaughter.

Princess B

Princess B had seven starts placing 1st and 3rd once and she came in 2nd two times, with a total earnings of $32,960 over a two year spread. This gorgeous mare wanted to please and win for her owners, but just didn’t have it in her to make it to the top. After racing she was retired as a brood mare for several years, but then was later sent to auction and was sold for slaughter. Lifetime Equine Refuge partnered with Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue to save Princess B just before she was shipped. When Princess B arrived Lifetime Equine Refuge we could see that she had not been treated like a Princess for some time. Her feet were long overdue for trimming; she was very thin, depressed, worn out and traumatized.

Thanks to your generous donations WFLF Lifetime Equine Refuge will be providing lifetime care for Princess B through our Garden of Equine Sanctuary program. We are happy to report that Princess is starting to put on weight and the old injury to her left front leg that was discovered upon intake doesn’t seem to bother her with light to moderate exercise. As an older horse with such good manners and a sweet personality she is also considered as a string potential candidate for therapeutic programs.

Healing Hearts of Horses
Lifetime Equine Refuge’ officially launched its Garden of Equine sanctuary and an enrichment program this summer, featuring our rescued horses. Through this program we provide humane education and compassionate mentoring with equine assisted learning to children and adults. Through the healing hearts of horses the Garden of Equine program inspires compassion and respect for animals while instilling hope, love and reverence for wild and domestic equines.

Molly is a beautiful spirit with a sweet heart. Before being rescued she served for many years at a riding stable but endured the hardships of neglect along the way. When we found her she had gone blind in one eye from an untreated injury and the other eye was severely inflamed, her feet had not been done in over two years and there were no vaccine records for her. Today, Molly’s story together with her wise and gentle manner is helping special needs youth to open their hearts to hope for a new future.

Senate to Vote re Appropriations Language

URGENT! Calls needed to your Senators to stop appropriations for horse slaughter

A full senate vote is scheduled this week; time is of the essence. Please call your senators and tell them you do not want funding for horse inspections. The senate bill should mirror the house bill by removing inspections for horses.

This is a financial bill therefore the economics are the important point to make. Comments should be factual and to the point. Humane issues are addressed with the bill to end horse slaughter - S 1176.

Points to make:
Don't waste valuable tax dollars to inspect animals that are not regulated as food animals. The limited funding dollars available for inspectors should be used to inspect our own food supply. Also it's a violation of the federal meat inspection act for the slaughter plants to pay for their own inspections.

The same number of horses are being slaughtered as when the plants were open proving there is no correlation between increases in neglect or a drop in horse prices and the availability of horse slaughter.

Horse slaughter encourages over breeding of horses that continuously feeds the slaughter pipeline. The insignificant revenue from horse slaughter that represents 3 cents on every $100 earned, does not impact the horse industry.

Imagine our surprise when Giselle, a 1500 lb Thoroughbred/ Warmblood mix flew over the six panel pipe rail standing 6' tall at the stroke of midnight Saturday. "No problem" she said, with her dressage and jumping background, as she pranced her way past the other rescue horses in their stalls. What made this gentle giant fly in the midst of darkness when the rest of her stall mates were nestled fast asleep? A look into her empty stall revealed a sitting duck; never seen before and whose feathers had been clipped. All in a days' work is what we say here at Lifetime Equine Refuge, home to some of the most beautiful ex-slaughter bound rescue horses around.

Giselle's story is representative of so many of the horses that wind up at slaughter - they just need a second chance at life, people who care and won't throw them away.

RENO, NV (July 19, 2011) — The U.S. Bureau of Land Management was given the green light on Tuesday to move ahead with a controversial horse roundup in Nevada when a federal appeals court lifted a temporary injunction blocking the gather of more than 1,700 mustangs.
An animal rights group, the Colorado-based Cloud Foundation, had sued to stop the roundup. A three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco said the group had failed to show it likely could prove during future hearings that the roundup is illegal and that removal of horses from federally protected public rangeland would cause irreparable harm.

Judge Richard Paez of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued the order after U.S. District Judge Howard McKibben earlier in the day denied a motion to stop the federal Bureau of Land Management's removal of mustangs from public lands near the Utah line.

America's Wild Horses Under Siege

Wild for Life Foundation is deeply concerned for the welfare of the Triple B Wild Horses. Despite a lawsuit filed by wild horse advocates to protect the horses from cruel removal, BLM's planned round up and removal of at least 1,726 wild horses from 1,682,998 acres herd management areas (HMAs) in eastern Nevada will go forward.U.S. District Court Judge Howard McKibben issued a decision in favor of the BLM which allows the BLM to proceed with the Triple B round up to remove wild horses beginning on Saturday, July 16.

There are 975 acres per wild horse is this HMA; yet BLM claims that the wild horse population is five times over the minimum appropriate management level. Horses will be stampeded by helicopter chases in deathly high summer temperatures. Many mares are pregnant and will most likely be unable to keep up the pace for the long distance stampede. Many foals have died in the process of previous round ups because their hooves fall off while trying to keep up with their mothers. 1000's of horses have died after being rounded up and placed in BLM holding facilities.

The BLM blames wild horses for poor range conditions where the land is actually overgrazed by cattle.

PLEASE help if you can - we need help to replenish the emergency hay fund which covers one month feed for the Lifetime Equine Refuge horses. Hay can mean the difference in life or death to a horse. Hay is one of the most important continuing expenses we must fund-raise for. Remember NO donation is too small!

Before these innocent wild and domestic horses were rescued they were victims of horrible abuse; severely under weight and traumatized from America’s slaughter pipeline. I know because work with each of the horses that come into our shelter myself. Many of these horses were rescued during the course of investigating the CA slaughter pipeline during the making of the film, "Saving America's Horses". They needed hay to begin their recovery and they needed love to gain back their self worth.. But it doesn’t end there. A balanced nutritional diet must be maintained to keep horses healthy.

Lawsuit Filed to Challenge Triple B Roundup

A lawsuit has been filed to try to stop BLM's planned round up and removal of at least 1,726 wild horses from 1,682,998 acres of the Triple B, Maverick Medicine and Antelope Valley herd management areas (HMAs) in eastern Nevada.

Plaintiff The Cloud Foundation describes, "The wild horses of the Triple B, Maverick Medicine and Antelope Valley HMAs are free-roaming on the remote high desert mountains and valleys of east central and northeast Nevada--north of Ely, south of Elko on the Utah border. They have been characterized as a diverse, colorful, intermingling herd with some possessing old mustang origins. Many wild horses descend from an old Shoshone Indian herd known for pintos and paints, as well as a number of medicine hats, horses sacred to Native Americans".
Only 472 horses would remain after the Triple B roundup, and the mares would all be treated with an immunocontraceptive drug, PZP, to prevent pregnancy for up to 2 years. This would leave an unnatural sex ratio of 60% male.
46,000 cows and sheep would be allowed to remain to graze.

According to the Bureau of Land Management, the 1,726 wild horses, with about 975 acres per horse, are destroying the range. But apparently 46,000 cows and sheep are having no effect at all on the condition of the range or water. The BLM refused even to consider the effect of so many cows and sheep on the range, let alone reducing their numbers.

As the Complaint filed by Plaintiffs The Cloud Foundation, Craig Downer and Lorna Moffat explains, "Those that are not re-released (about 1,700) would be transported by big rig trucks to long term holding facilities in the Midwest of the United States, where they would live out their lives in confined, zoo-like conditions, separated by sex or sterilized, wild and free-roaming no more.
"Family members would be permanently separated-stallions and mares from each other, and mares and stallions from their foals. Long-term family bonds would be forever severed. Incarcerated in long-term holding facilities in the Midwest, stallions would be gelded, mares would typically be separated from the gelded stallions, and the acres per wild horse in these fenced facilities would be only a tiny fraction of what it is in their natural homeland in the HMA."

The BLM is required to justify its brutal roundups and removal of wild horses and burros from the range in Environmental Assessments called EAs. Under the National Environmental Policy Act, "whether by Environmental Impact Statement or Environmental Assessment, the agency must ‘study, develop, and describe appropriate alternatives to recommended courses of action in any proposal...'" 42 U.S.C. §4332(E). The implementing regulations provide that this consideration of all reasonable alternatives is "the heart of" the environmental analysis. 40 CFR §1502.14.

EAs when issued in cases recommending roundups of wild horses and burros are typically cookie cutter reports go something like this: The few wild horses and burros, as in this case, are causing degradation of the range and water sources; the range cannot support the horses and most or all are "excess" which must be removed.

Typically, these EAs fail to mention the numbers of livestock that are more likely the culprit of any range degradation or lack of water. There are any number of cases where the evidence establishes that, in fact, the range can support the few wild horses that under the Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971, 16 U.S.C. §§1331 et seq., are supposed to be protected from "capture", "harassment" and "death" and managed at "the minimal feasible level". Only "excess" horses, those that represent an overpopulation, can be removed. The goal is to maintain a "thriving ecological balance".

In this case the Decision Record ("DR"), Finding of No Significant Impact ("FONSI"), and Final EA ("FEA") were issued on May 17, 2011. True to form, BLM claims the few horses are degrading the range. As the plaintiffs' point out, "the BLM [fails to] explain how any noncompliance with land standards ...is not primarily the result of livestock grazing, which is about eight times higher and more intensive than grazing from wild horses". Complaint, par. 36.

The roundup was to have begun by now but the BLM delayed it pending a July 14, 2011 hearing before the Nevada federal District Court on the plaintiffs' motion for a preliminary injunction to stop the roundup and removal.

Federal Bill to End Inhumane Equine Transport

Senator Kirk Introduces Bill to End Inhumane Transport of Horses Via Double Deck Trailers

Washington, D.C. Late Monday night, Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) introduced The Horse Transportation Safety Act of 2011 (S. 1281) to ban double deck trailer transportation of horses in the United States. Senator Kirk has worked to end the use of double deck transports for hauling horses since serving in the House of Representatives, following a horrific double deck trailer accident that took place in his state.

Double deck livestock trailers on the road today were built to meet the specific design and engineering requirements of short-necked livestock species, like cattle, sheep, and swine. Unfortunately, a few irresponsible haulers have used these trailers against manufacturer intent to transport horses, leading to inhumane travel conditions for equines and unsafe roadways for drivers. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the National Agriculture Safety Database (NASD) have recommended ceiling heights no lower than 7-8 to transport horses safely, while average double deck trailer ceiling heights range from 4'7"-5'11". The U.S. Department of Transportation only requires bridges to have a vertical clearance of 14' in both rural and urban areas, making it impractical to build or modify a trailer large enough to transport equines on two levels.

Besides being an inhumane way to transport horses, double-deck trailers pose a major safety threat to the drivers of the imbalanced, oversized vehicles, as well as to other motorists, said Senator Kirk. Unfortunately, crashes due to these factors have occurred, and the results of the accidents are devastating. Following an accident in 2007 in Wadsworth, Ill., authorities worked for five hours before they were able to free the horses from the wreckage.

Today, most professional horse haulers believe double deck trailer transportation of horses has been banned. While there are a few state laws prohibiting the use of double deck trailers, there are no federal guidelines regarding the humane transport of horses, other than those going to slaughter. Even those are flawed; current USDA regulations banning double deck transportation only cover horses heading directly to a slaughterhouse. Horses bound anywhere else, or en route to a midpoint in their journey (such as an auction house or feedlot) legally may be hauled in a double deck trailer notwithstanding the cruelty. The USDA has expressed a desire to strengthen regulations banning this inhumane practice, but has yet to take action on the matter.

The Horse Transportation Safety Act of 2011 (S.1281) is necessary to protect horses from being transported across the United States in a trailer having more than one level. Emergency funds are currently being raised so that horses don't go hungry. Tax Payer Funding of Horse Slaughter goes to Vote this Week!

On May 30^th, the House Appropriations Committee approved an amendment to the FY2012 Agriculture Appropriations bill that prevents your tax dollars from being used to fund inspections of horse slaughter facilities. This bipartisan language has been included in every Agriculture Appropriations bill since 2005. Without this important provision, foreign investors will be able to reestablish horse slaughter in the U.S. at the expense of taxpayers, our own food safety, and the welfare of horses.

The full House of Representatives will vote on the FY12 Agriculture Appropriations bill this Wednesday, June 15. An amendment may be offered to remove the Committee-approved language prohibiting the USDA from spending your tax dollars to inspect horse slaughter facilities. Maintaining the USDA language defunding inspections of horse slaughter facilities as currently included is vital to protecting our horses. It is critical that you call TODAY and urge your legislator to strongly OPPOSE ANY amendment to restore horse slaughter.

Artivist Film Festival Rescheduled to August

Just as U.S. Representatives Jim Moran (D-VA) and Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) are calling for an end to horse slaughter, a bill to make that happen is introduced in the Senate. Here is what Sens. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC), the sponsors, have released about this bill:

The Problem: Somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000 horses/year are exported from the United States each year with the intent to slaughter for human consumption.
There are no horse slaughterhouses in the United States, and there is not a demand for horse meat in the United States. Two out three Americans believe the practice of horse slaughter is unnecessary and inhumane. Transport to foreign slaughterhouses is lengthy and cruel.

Horses in the United States differ from other livestock in that they have never been raised for the purpose of slaughter. As such, they are frequently treated with drugs that are toxic when ingested by humans and not approved for use in animals raised for human consumption.

Additionally, we have no system in the United States to track which medications a horse has received throughout its lifetime, which makes horse meat a serious food safety/American food export risk.
The Solution: The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act of 2011, S.B. 1176, amends the Horse Protection Act (HPA) to prohibit the sale or transport of horses or equine parts in interstate or foreign commerce with the intent of processing for human consumption.

The bill, filed on June 9, already has a number of co-sponsors.

Senate Reintroduces Bill to Permanently Ban Horse Slaughter

Washington, D.C. -- A bill to ban horse slaughter was reintroduced in the United States Senate today. Sponsored by Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), the "American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act of 2011" will end the slaughter of American horses here and, most urgently, will stop these horses from being exported abroad for slaughter. The sponsors, who have long championed the cause, have the bipartisan support of 14 colleagues who are co-sponsoring the bill.

"As a lifelong horse lover and rider, this practice is appalling to me, and more importantly, the majority of Americans oppose it. We raise and train horses to trust us, perform for us, and allow us on their backs, and as such, they deserve to be treated with human compassion. When horse owners are faced with the sad reality of having to put their animals down, it should be by humane euthanasia," said Senator Landrieu. "I intend to work with Senator Lindsey Graham from South Carolina and my other colleagues to get this bill passed and permanently end the slaughter of our American horses."

The legislation comes at a time when horse slaughter no longer occurs on U.S. soil, but each year approximately 100,000 American horses are hauled to Canada, Mexico and beyond. Reports show that horses regularly travel for hundreds or even thousands of miles to the slaughterhouses on double-deck cattle trucks without food, water or rest. At some Mexican slaughterhouses horses are stabbed repeatedly in the spine until they are paralyzed, after which they are butchered while still fully conscious. This country's last three horse slaughter plants - two in Texas and one in Illinois - were shut down in 2007.
"The slaughter of horses is not a substitute for humane euthanasia though it is often mischaracterized as such by opponents who are more concerned with wringing a few bucks from a suffering animal than doing what is right," said Chris Heyde, of Animal Welfare Institute.

For years, the pro-slaughter camp has led a concerted and disingenuous effort to resurrect the industry domestically and has used scare tactics in an attempt to defeat the federal ban. The federal legislation is desperately needed to stop the slaughter of American horses, irrespective of where the killing takes place.

Return of commercial horse slaughter to the U.S.?

The Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug, Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Committee has released its proposed appropriations budget for FY 2012.

The proposed bill does not include a provision de-funding inspections for horses to be slaughtered for human consumption. The proposed bill does not prohibit use of funds to inspect horses to be slaughtered for human consumption. The subcommittee report does not mention it.

It is the de-funding of these ante-mortem inspections in appropriations measures that has prohibited commercial horse slaughter for human consumption in the U.S. since 2007. Now, if the subcommittee bill passes, it could mean the return of commercial horse slaughter to the U.S.

The International Wildlife Film Festival shared a strong focus on the wild horse issue as presented in the film Saving America’s Horses A Nation Betrayed. The festival was attended by Missoula's moviegoers, elite fine arts community, humanitarians and philanthropists together with an international cross section of award winning wildlife filmmakers and conservationists. During the festival’s symposium and panel presentations there were passionate and somewhat heated discussions on the topic of wild horses versus feral horses. However nobody challenged the inhumane treatment of equines through the slaughter pipeline or of wild equines during their capture by the BLM.

Several local advocates attended Saturday's screening and came back prior to Tuesday’s screenings with their horses to hold a rally downtown for the purpose of raising awareness about the film and the cause. Montana Senator Dave Wanzenried attended the rally and walked along side filmmaker Katia Louise in sync with the local advocates.

Transport Assistance Needed for Rescue Thoroughbreds

We have the opportunity to have six of our rescued Thoroughbreds attend the Monty Roberts training program beginning in early February 2011. All of these horses were rescued straight from the slaughter pipeline last year and have since fully recovered, put on weight and are ready for this exciting next step.

We need your support so we can provide them with this incredible training opportunity. Donations are sought for transport expenses and we are also looking for volunteers in the S. Calif area who can provide some assistance handling and transporting these horses on their return. The quote for the professional transport of all six horses to Monty Roberts is $440. Pro Horse Slaughter "Summit" Not Happy with Dr. Grandin

Temple Grandin, Ph.D. delivered another disappointment to organizers of the misnamed "Summit of the Horse" in Las Vegas yesterday. Dr. Grandin was touted as a "featured speaker" who was said to be designing a horse slaughter facility in Wyoming that would be owned and operated by Wy state Rep. Sue Wallis.

Prior to the "summit", Dr. Grandin told Animal Law Coalition "I have told Sue Wallis that I want no involvement in her business dealings. ...[W]e have done no design work." Dr. Grandin was also quoted by Horseback Magazine as saying Wallis had "misrepresent[ed]" her involvement.

At the "summit" Dr. Grandin told attendees that many people had contacted her and urged her not to attend.

Dr. Grandin was a sobering reminder that this should be about what is best for the horses.

She described herself as "neutral" on the issue of whether to ban horse slaughter for human consumption. And, Dr. Grandin's reluctance to endorse a ban on horse slaughter for human consumption stems from two concerns: 1. She said several times that a "horse's worst nightmare" was to end up at a Mexican slaughterhouse, particularly a municipal abbatoir, where they are repeatedly jabbed with puntilla knives and slaughtered while conscious. 2. Dr. Grandin was skeptical that legislation to close the border and stop export of horses for slaughter for human consumption would be enforceable. She noted that it would be very easy to smuggle horses in closed vehicles or state other reasons for their export, particularly to Mexico.

But Dr. Grandin also told "summit" attendees that only about 20% of animal slaughter facilities operate within acceptable humane guidelines and the rest "slip into bad practices" with a full 10% intentionally treating animals cruelly.

Dr. Grandin said that in auditing slaughter facilities, 95% of the animals, whether they are horses, pigs, cows, etc., must be stunned effectively on the first blow or shot or the facility should be considered to have failed. She also strongly advocated video monitoring, non-slip flooring and high solid sides to prevent the animals from seeing anything. She agreed there are behavioral signs that can indicate when an animal is afraid and steps should be taken to alleviate the fear.

Dr. Grandin made the point that "you manage what you measure" and told attendees slaughter facilities should be audited using criteria such as whether animals are stunned on the first attempt, whether they vocalize which is a sign of fear, whether they slip or fall, how they are handled by employees, etc.

It was not what "summit" attendees wanted to hear. One man, claiming he was speaking on behalf of most people present, said Dr. Grandin's standards to prevent cruelty would be "costly".

But there was no compromise from Dr. Grandin. She pointed out humane euthanasia as an option. She also said people had sent her a number of ways to reduce numbers of excess horses or help horses in need. She then read them to the attendees: birth control including low cost gelding though only one facility currently offers that service, raising awareness about overbreeding, find jobs for older horses, establish a "horsefinder" that like petfinder.com would help owners network to find homes for horses they cannot care for any longer, establish hay banks and allow hay to be harvested on land that the government pays farmers to leave unplanted, allow in place rescue, create horse parks, or impose surcharges on stall fees at tracks and horsebreeding to cover the cost of humane euthanasia.

In effect, the solutions relayed by Dr. Grandin are (1) stop the overbreeding, (2) find ways to care for horses in need.

And the best way to do that? Ban the slaughter of American horses for human consumption. The availability of slaughter creates a salvage or secondary market that encourages the overbreeding. As Dr. Grandin warned, however, any legislation to ban slaughter must be enforceable.

Was "summit" organizer, Wy state Rep. Sue Wallis listening to the high standards for humane treatment that Dr. Grandin would impose on her proposed slaughter facility should it ever be legally and otherwise operational? Unlikely, as Wallis appears to have been busy angrily shoving reporter and horse advocate Simone Netherlands out of the "summit" conference room. The police were called and Netherlands was treated for injuries at a local hospital. Dr. Grandin is lucky to have escaped unscathed given Wallis' treatment of people who don't agree with her.

Summer Lovin' for Rescue Horses!

Summer is kicking off with a bang this year! Several of Wild for Life Foundation's rescue horses under the care of Lifetime Equine Refuge and Rescue (WFLF's rescue program) have been able to relocate to a new equine facility in Southern California.

WFLF Lifetime Equine Refuge and Rescue is honored to announce their new equine rescue facility. It's on a private ranch called Iris Creek Ranch. The ranch is donating approximately two acres of land use for stable space to WFLF to benefit these very special horses in need. In honor of the donors' request their identity shall remain anonymous.

It's been very busy around the ranch with all the corrals, stalls and fencing coming in for the horses, plus brush clearing, tree trimming and trench digging. WFLF would like to extend their most heartfelt gratitude to the generous volunteers that have come out to the new facility to help with getting it set up.

The lucky new equine residents are receiving much needed attention and care throughout the day. Each horse is fed quality hay and supplements to fit their individual dietary needs such as weight, breed, activity level and background. All horses get 2-4 hours of turn out time every day for self exercise and socialization. The facility is monitored 24/7 and the stables and fencing are safety checked on a regular basis.

We are an all volunteer 501 (c)(3) nonprofit CA public benefit organization. Donations are tax deductible to the fullest extend permitted by law. Volunteer services and services provided at a discount are very much appreciated.

Trainers, farriers, veterinary care and other specialized equine care givers are sought for the horses at this facility. Volunteer groomers, handlers and stable hands are also needed. Willie Nelson’s daughter, and grand-daughter, Amy and Raelyn (Aunt and Niece), have been working locally in their state of TN and federally on behalf of the horses. They have lobbied in Washington D.C. on multiple occasions to gain support for the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act (H.R 503/ SB. 727). The girls and Willie all speak at various venues in effort to teach others how to show support for the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act and also the Restore Our American Mustangs Act (ROAM) to amend the 1971 Free Roaming Wild Horses and Burros Act.

Canada has its first Bill to ban horse slaughter! A big thank you to NDP MP Alex Atamanenko and horse supporters everywhere for this huge, historical step toward banning horse slaughter in Canada.

On June 16, 2010, a Private Member's Bill to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption was tabled in Canadian Parliament by MP Alex Atamanenko (NDP Agriculture Critic). The basis of the bill is the fact that horses are not food-producing animals and many are treated with drugs that are prohibited from entering the human food chain.

This bill is a huge step forward in the movement to abolish a cruel, archaic and unnecessary industry, and we applaud Mr. Atamanenko for his monumental initiative.

What can horse advocates do to ensure that this bill becomes law?

There is a process involved: All Private Member's bills must be debated and pass three readings. In order to move forward, a vote must take place and a bill must have the support of the majority of Members of Parliament.

2010 Not a Good Year for Horse Slaughter Proponents

CHICAGO, (EWA) - Equine Welfare Alliance and Animal Law Coalition applaud the grass roots efforts in 2010 that have resulted in a series of political defeats for those who want to bring horse slaughter back to the United States.

Of course, commercial horse slaughter for human consumption remains illegal in the U.S. and no state law can change that.

Nonetheless, proponents of the cruel practice have tried to use state legislatures to try to convince Americans to bring horse slaughter back to the U.S.

In Missouri, for example, a bill, H.B. 1747, introduced by state Rep. James Viebrock, purported to allow the state to register and license and even provide inspections for horse slaughter facilities. There was even talk of building a horse slaughter plant in a small town in the state.

The bill raised a howl of opposition from horse advocates across the state and country, leading some of its sponsors to become irate to the point of returning opponents' emails unread or forwarding them en masse to one opponent. Some legislators even left harassing, intimidating messages on an opponent's voice mail.
Although state Sen. Dan Clemons announced publicly that Viebrock's bill would progress no further, its provisions were quietly buried in another, unrelated bill, SB 795. A firestorm of public anger erupted when this underhanded tactic was discovered, and the provisions were removed.

EWA's John Holland and former Kaufman, Texas Mayor Paula Bacon testified against HB 4812 in Tennessee, a pro-horse slaughter bill. Mayor Bacon described the economic and environmental devastation a horse slaughter facility caused to her town. Holland told legislators about the declining demand for horsemeat and stepped up enforcement of EU regulations and new restrictions that will likely mean fewer and fewer American horses will be eligible for slaughter. Add to that the dangers of American horsemeat from the toxic drugs given to horses here as established in a recent study published in the peer reviewed journal, Food and Chemical Toxicology, Association of phenylbutazone usage with horses bought for slaughter: A public health risk, and, said Holland, "it would make no sense and, in fact, would be irresponsible for legislators to promote horse slaughter with this bill". The bill was then sent for "summer study", essentially withdrawing it for the session.

Also this year, an investigation revealing the cruelty of horse slaughter horrified European consumers and caused the second largest grocer in Belgium and Holland to remove American horse meat from its shelves and a major distributor to assure customers it will only sell European horse meat.

The Carry the Kettle first nation tribe in Canada declined an offer of economic assistance to reopen the Natural Valley Farms slaughter plant in Saskatchewan. The plant had been closed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency after it was discovered dumping blood into the local river and leaving waste in shallow pits.
In Illinois, a bill aimed at repealing the state's 2007 ban on slaughter was withdrawn by its sponsor when it failed to muster support.

Florida's legislature unanimously passed legislation toughening laws against those who butcher horses, or sell or purchase horse meat. The legislation was signed into law Friday by Governor Charlie Crist.
The people of Hardin, Montana said no to a proposed horse slaughter plant in their city and even amended city ordinances to prohibit the slaughter of more than ten animals in a seven day period.

Even Jim Schwartz, director of the Wyoming Livestock Board was puzzled by a law sponsored by state Rep. Sue Wallis, that made "send to slaughter" an option for horses in the custody of the Board. "Send to slaughter is not an option in my opinion," said Schwartz. We agree.

These majestic and loyal beings endure barbaric cruelty; oftentimes changing hands repeatedly in the course of an unspeakable journey, eventually crossing federal borders only to face horrific slaughter. A very small number of foreigners profit highly from the sale of horse meat which is served as a delicacy overseas. Though some American breeders have taken honorable steps to help BAN horse slaughter, the majority continues to breed indiscriminately. They justify this surplus of horses based on the desires and whims of the horsemanship industry and while the horrors of slaughter are swept under the rug. All told, it’s a complicated slippery slope perpetuated by special interests seeking to get a piece of the bloody pie.

Sadly, there is such an intense need to save these horses from this barbaric treatment that many slaughter bound horses are sometimes rescued just for the purpose of humane lethal injection, but these humane acts of mercy will never end the vicious circle of slaughter. Horse slaughter is NOT humane and cannot be made humane. Until enough people take a stand, the over breeding will continue as driven by the market for horse meat.

If you would like to give back to the horses for the loyalty they have provided to mankind over the span of time, please support this Cause. Our board of advisors consists of the nation's finest equine veterinarians, trainers and specialists and we have many prominent celebrities on board in support our work. Rescue is NOT the answer to stopping horse slaughter and these horses need supporters that will help insure their long term quality care for the duration of their lives. Many generous donors step up to help rescue horses from the slaughter pipeline, but these horses need sponsors to help pay for their ongoing feed and care until they can be adopted into new forever homes. Your meaningful donations can be designated according to your preference whether for rescue, care and sanctuary or for educational media to raise public outcry and BAN this sordid practice for good.

Thoroughbreds, Mustangs and Paints!

April has been an exciting month for horses at Lifetime Equine Refuge and our horses are feeling the love!

THOROUGHBREDS!

WFLF Lifetime Equine Refuge is honored to extend our sincere gratitude to Randal Kleiser (Grease, Blue Lagoon) for graciously sponsoring corral space for two of our most recently rescued Thoroughbreds, Giselle and Carmel. Randal helped to save their lives and we could not have rescued them without his generous support.

These two beauties arrived last month and have been able to find tranquility on a very special private ranch, thanks to Randal. Randal is also an experienced horseman and he was quick to offer his open corrals the moment he learned about their need. Randal Kleiser has been an internationally known film director since the release of his first feature, Grease, the most successful movie musical ever made. Other features include The Blue Lagoon, Summer Lovers, Honey I Blew Up the Kids and White Fang.

We would also like to thank John R Murrell for his generous donation which made it possible for us to pull Carmel to safety. Special thanks to Saving Horses Inc and the Fans of Barbaro for the funds needed to pull Giselle to safety and for their support toward feed for a month.

Carmel, an off track thoroughbred actually took 1^st place in her last race, winning over $30,000 and Giselle never had a chance to start. WFLF Lifetime Equine Refuge has taken in these two Thoroughbreds and we will be providing them with the care and time they need to fully recuperate and transition. Donations are needed for Giselle and Carmel's ongoing feed, vaccines and farrier. Your gifts are greatly appreciated.

MUSTANGS!
Lifetime Equine Refuge would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the many supporters who helped us achieve the successful long term placement for three rescued Mustangs, Shelby, Smudge and Gypsy. We are honored to announce that WFLF LERR Board Member, Michael Blake (Dances With Wolves) has graciously become the new long term care provider for these three lucky Mustangs. They arrived earlier this month at Michael's private ranch in Arizona.

Gypsy and Smudge are two Mustangs that were rounded up and removed from their legal herd area in Northern CA, by the BLM. They went through the adoption process and were trained by a reputable wild horse trainer, but these two free spirited wilds just were not cut out for a life of domestic servitude. Their previous owner later relinquished them to a person they thought would provide a good home for them, but sadly they were "scammed" and these two very special horses wound up on a feedlot bound for slaughter. Shelby is another rescued Mustang that came from the same herd as Smudge and Gypsy at the Carter Res HMA. Shelby too had been down the long road of post BLM adoption and recently found herself orphaned.
Whether it was luck or meant to be, these three Mustangs eventually wound up back together again. WFLF Lifetime Equine Refuge has taken them in and Michael Blake has accepted them as part of his family.
Through the generosity of Michael Blake; Shelby, Gypsy and Smudge will now be able to live out the rest of her lives together in peace. Michael has a lifetime of experience with both wild and domestic horses. He is dedicated to their well being and has created a special sanctuary for them to call home. To learn more about Michael's rich and colorful background with wild horses, read his recent memoir, "Twelve, the King".
This has been a collaborative effort and we are thankful for the assistance of Saving Horses Inc who raised the funds for the Professional Transport services. We also extend our sincere appreciation to the Fans of Barbaro for their generous support.

MORE MUSTANGS!

Lifetime Equine Refuge is proud to extend a very special thanks to Dr Elliot Katz of In Defense of Animals for being there to help us save Papala and Tawaci, two Mustangs that were recently bound for slaughter. IDA generously donated the needed funds for their bail and transport. It really came down to the wire for these two horses, but this was a collaborative rescue effort. We would also like to extend a very special thanks to Neda DeMayo of Return to Freedom for being there to help with QT and toward facilitating the adoption of these two Mustangs. They are gorgeous, very much alive and safe!! We appreciate all of your support.

PAINT!

Lifetime Equine Refuge also recently rescued a Paint Quarter Horse mare named Gracie. This beautiful horse had been used for breeding and when she couldn't produce any more, Gracie was dumped. We would like to extend our appreciation to Saving Horses Inc for their generous support in helping to facilitate her rescue and for helping to raise the funds needed for her bail. We rescued Gracie just this month and found a place for her with the help of Mustang Spirit who placed her in foster care. Gracie is doing very well.
